Skiing

The San Juan Mountains and surrounding Four Corners area is renowned for world class skiing. Just ask Shaun White, who trained on a “secret” Redbull halfpipe in the mountains near Silverton. Or the American Ski Team who practices regularly in our region. Discover the different slopes and trails in Southwest Colorado.

Durango Mountain Resort: Durango’s ski resort located 35 out of town and located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. DMR is a large ski area with a variety of runs and plenty of terrain for skiers and boarders of all caliber.

Wolf Creek Ski Area: Located just outside of Pagosa Springs on the opposite side of Wolf Creek Pass. Wolf Creek boasts a greater average annual snowfall than the majority of ski areas in the United States.

Silverton Mountain: For advanced and expert skiers only. One chairlift and no grooming on a mountain that receives over 400″ average snowfall. Skiing Silverton is skiing the youngest mountain slopes in the Rockies.

Chapman Hill: Durango’s in-town ski hill. Featuring a tow-lift and located right next to the indoor ice rink and right next to the Fort Lewis College campus. One hill that’s maintained regularly with snowmaking.

Hesperus Ski Area: Enjoy skiing under the blue skies and bright sunshine of our Southwestern Colorado winter days. Hesperus Ski Area also offers skiing under the stars!! From the top at 8,800 foot level to the lodge, 80% of Hesperus Ski Area is lighted and waiting for you!

Back-Country / Cross-Country Skiing

The back country more your style? You’re in luck. In the winter, every trail converts to a back country ski trail. There are many “off the map” opportunities, as well as numerous Nordic centers and groomed cross-country trails.

Vallecito Nordic Center: Located on the banks of Vallecito Lake. The Vallecito Nordic Center is a secluded Nordic track that follows the roads or the lake shore. Remote and scenic with plenty of friendly local faces.

Nordic Center @ Purgatory: Located right off the highway and in proximity to the Durango Mountain Resort ski area. Great cross-country tracks for all levels of skiers.

Hillcrest Golf Course: Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t spend your whole day golfing. When it snows, the local golf courses convert into beautiful cross-country Nordic ski tracks.

Pagosa Nordic: The Pagosa Nordic Club is a 100% volunteer organization with a mission “To enhance winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing & snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events”.
